What's Wrong With Classroom Sex Education?

This article originally appeared in an October-December 1994 publication of Our Lady’s Crusaders for Life. It focuses on the problem of sex-ed in our Catholic schools. It is intended to help parents understand the horror of sex-ed, to point to helpful resources, and to present the results of some efforts to remove sex-ed from the archdiocese. Our Lady's Crusaders for Life focuses on sex-ed because it is a root cause of abortion. This article gives only a brief overview. (If time permits, the Veil of Innocence encourages the reader to study the complete correspondence spanning many years (1988 - 1995) between Alice Grayson, President of the Veil of Innocence, and Cardinal Law of the Archdiocese of Boston. These letters can be accessed on this web site at “Sex Education Information” under “Letters of Alice Grayson To Cardinal Law”)

Classroom Sex Education (CSE) is any course providing detailed information on sex or leading children through discussions of sexual situations, e.g., petting (sometimes called "Chastity Education"). The main reason we oppose CSE is because it puts children in the proximate occasion of sin.

CSE is not of Catholic origin. It originates with the population-control/free-love people (e.g., Planned Parenthood). CSE is not about making babies (which Catholics historically do well), but about preventing them. It doesn't take years of courses to teach where babies come from. CSE promotes fornication ("sexual activity"), and naturally leads to abortion. After the notorious 1973 Roe v Wade decision, Alan Guttmacher (the former president of Planned Parenthood) set forth the strategy for a battle plan.

Then how can the Supreme Court's decision be absolutely secured?  The answer is Sex Education.

The Case Against Classroom Sex Education (CSE)

CSE is an Occasion of Sin. CSE presents sexually stimulating material. It makes public and open what is by nature private and intimate. CSE leads children to ponder their own sexual function. This opens the door to impure thoughts and sexual immorality. The danger of concupiscence and other effects of Original Sin are ignored.

The Magisterium Condemns CSE. Pope Pius XI prohibited CSE in his 1929 encyclical, Christian Education of Youth:

"Far too common is the error of those who with dangerous assurance and under an ugly term propagate a so-called sex-education, falsely imagining they can forearm youths against the dangers of sensuality by means purely natural, such as a foolhardy initiation and precautionary instruction for all indiscriminately, even in public; and worse still, by exposing them at an early age to the occasions, in order to accustom them, so it is argued, and as it were to harden them against such dangers

“In this extremely delicate matter, if, all things considered, some private instruction is found necessary and opportune, from those who hold from God the commission to teach and who have the grace of state, every precaution must be taken. Such precautions are well known in traditional Christian education.

"Hence it is of the highest importance that a good father, while discussing with his son a matter so delicate, should be well on his guard and not descend to details...”

1931 - The Holy Office

Question:
On March 21, 1931, the Holy Office was asked the question: May the method called "Sex-education" or even "Sex initiation" be approved?

Answer:
No. In the education of youth the method to be followed is that hitherto observed by the Church and the Saints as recommended by His Holiness the Pope in the encyclical dealing with the Christian education of youth, promulgated on December 31, 1929.

Pope Pius XII reasserted this teaching of his predecessor. It is a wonder that it is ignored today. (At the end of this article there is a link to to “Selected Teachings of the Catholic Church on Sex Education."

CSE gives a Fraudulent Catechesis. CSE employs a method known as "values clarification." It had this effect on a young girl attending the Central Catholic High School in Allentown, PA:

"The Catholic Church with its strict views on premarital sex, allows me to ask, 'If I go against God, are my reasons worthy enough to take the chance?' On the one hand I can abstain, stay pure, in a moral way. I can also have sex, and still be pure in God's eyes. I know whatever choice I make God will still love me, forgive and bless me."

CSE Violates Parent's Rights. Human Sexuality Education is the parent's right and duty. The Massachusetts Catholic Conference recognizes this in their flyer, What Every Parent Should Know About Human Sexuality Education.

CSE Promotes a Fraudulent Catechesis.

CSE is Unnecessary for any Children.

CSE Invades Privacy.

CSE Destroys Innocence.

CSE Destroys Modesty.

CSE can be Psychologically Damaging.

Dr. Melvin Anchell, author of What's Wrong With Sex Education.?

"The fact is that the intrusion of an adult - whether a sex teacher or not - into the sexuality of children is a form of child molestation that can be just as harmful as an actual attack by a child molester."

THE ANSWER TO CSE - AUTHENTIC CATHOLIC CATECHESIS

Formation in Virtue, including the means of grace, especially frequent Sacramental Communion and Penance.

Devotion to Mary, especially daily family Rosary.

Devotion to the Saints, especially St. Maria Goretti who chose death over impurity at age 12 in 1903.

Pious Practices: Prayers to banish impure thoughts; avoiding impure: conversation, TV, music, movies, videos, concerts, the Web, magazines; custody of the eyes; avoiding idleness; avoiding immodest dress.

Protect Your Children!

Insist on reading any programs at your school. Insist on removing your children from any sex-information program. It is your right! You may even have to remove your children from the school. Inform other parents. Work to institute Eucharistic Adoration and the Rosary at your parish.
